Sanny’s Hamburgers and Gravy

SKU:
These burgers make me happy for home. My sister says the mayonnaise is the magic sauce everything together and keeps the burgers from drying out and losing flavor.

Sanny’s hamburgers are heavenly eaten loco-moco-style with rice, an easy-over egg and gravy. Also works as a traditional meat and mashed potatoes meal.

Ingredients

1 package of hamburger, in this rare case, no substitutes
1 onion, very finely chopped
A few good shakes of Worcestershire sauce
2-3 pieces of sliced bread, well-toasted then crumbled
1 large dollop of mayonnaise, maybe about ¼ cup
1 tiny bit of sesame oil, scant ¼ - ½t
Just enough to be able to smell it in the mixture
Hawaiian salt and black pepper to taste

Optional add-ins
2-3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped (recommended)
2-3 finely chopped mushrooms (truly optional)
Gravy
Half a handful of hamburger

1 onion, thinly sliced into rings
1 tub of mushrooms, sliced
Pan drippings from the hamburgers

Beef broth
Flour to thicken
Milk (optional)

What To Do

Set aside half a handful of hamburger for making gravy.

Mix the rest of the hamburger with the onion, toast crumbs, Worcestershire, mayonnaise, sesame oil, salt and pepper together and form patties. Fry or grill.

To make the gravy, cook the extra hamburger and onion in the pan drippings until the onions are well cooked and starting to caramelize. Add mushrooms and cook until they release their juices. Add beef broth to make as much or as little gravy as you like. Sift in flour slowly to thicken. Add milk to taste if you feel like it’s too salty.

Eat over hot rice. To make loco-moco, simply fry and egg.

Notes

  • Normally, I would use ground turkey and ground beef interchangeably. In this rare instance, do not swap.
  • I absolutely adore my sister’s cooking and she measures even less than I do. I have tried to add some measure around these, but this is a very forgiving eye-ball-it kind of recipe.
