Shoyu Hotdogs from Small Kid Time

SKU:
What could be more American than hotdogs?

But shoyu hotdogs? A shoyu hotdog octopus?! This is pure small-kid fun food. My mom was partial to whatever was on sale, and this sweet/salty treat doesn’t disappoint small and full-grown humans both.

Back in the day, we didn't wonder what animal parts went into a hot dog. It was enough that we knew it wasn't an actual dog.

Ingredients

4 hotdogs
1-2T shoyu
1-2T brown or raw sugar
Should be equal parts shoyu and brown sugar

What To Do

Slice hotdogs on the diagonal, as noted above.

See notes below for octopus creation. Well worth it for the cuteness factor.

Heat shoyu and sugar in a small saute pan. Toss the hotdogs in and saute just enough for the shoyu/sugar sauce to stick to the hotdogs and get shiny. The sauce may bubble slightly, but do not let it boil.

Best with musubi, rice and baby carrot sticks.

Notes and Talking Story

  • To make an octopus, cut the hotdog in half. From a hotdog octopus anatomy perspective, the end of the hotdog will be the head.
  • From the cut side, carefully split in half lengthwise, leaving about 1/2" unsplit (i.e., do not cut to the end of the hotdog). Split each half in half to make 4 tentacles. Then split those in half to make 8.
  • Be prepared to have at least one partially amputated octopus.
  • To cook,  place them so that their tentacles are fanned out, and they will curl as the hotdogs heat. Spoon a bit of shoyu sugar sauce over to color consistently.
  • We still buy hotdogs once in a special while, mostly to eat these. If you really want to feel better about it, you can buy grass-fed Angus organic beef hotdogs. But it's still a hot dog.
