mashed potatoes by microwave

My kids were begging for mashed potatoes when we were out of a stove. Begging quickly deteriorated to whining so in pure desperation, I tried the microwave. It works amazingly well, but poke *lots* of holes in the potatoes. This prevents a potato explosive. I may never go back to boiling.

4-5 yukon gold potatoes, washed and wet
Hawaiian salt and pepper to taste
Milk
Butter

Wash the potatoes well, and don't dry them. You don't even need to peel them. Using a fork, stab at the potatoes until there are little holes all over them. It doesn't have to be too deep, just make sure you get good coverage. Put the potatoes in a microwave-safe glass bowl and cover the potatoes with a very wet (almost but not quite dripping) paper towel.

Microwave at 50% for 5 minutes. Check it--they should still be pretty hard. Microwave at 50% again for another 5 minutes. At this point, they will be starting to soften. Microwave at 50% for another 5 minutes. After this, they should be ready to mash, but if they are still a little hard, microwave one more time for 3-5 minutes.

At this point, they will be no different than if you boiled it, and actually have a little more potato-flavored because they haven't had the taste boiled out. Mash, adding a little milk and butter to make a creamy texture. Serve warm.
