all-purpose smoothies

Picture
For all of us who love Jamba Juice, get your blender out now.

This is another one of those super flexible recipes that I just love. With a few simple categories of ingredients, the possibilities are nearly factorial. Plus it takes about 90 seconds to make.

The banana and crushed ice give smoothies their body and texture. The rest is up to you! The one pictured at left was blueberries, bananas, raspberries, vanilla yogurt and a touch of black currant juice.

Required ingredients (no substitutes)
1 banana
2 large cups of crushed ice (see below)

Required Equipment
1) Blender, ideally with a "pulse" or "crush ice" setting
2) Crushed ice feature on your fridge. Alternately, you can put ice cubes in a Ziploc and hammer on them.
Variable ingredients
Berries--your choice
1 small carton of Greek yogurt

Sweetener liquid--pineapple juice, raspberry syrup, coconut water
Optional--honey

The order of this is important so that you don't get a huge mess.

Break up the banana into about 4-5 pieces and drop it in the blender. Add a handful of your preferred berries or stone fruit. In this case if the fruit is a little soft, this is OK.

Dump in the yogurt. Add a splash of liquid sweetener--juice or coconut water. No more than about 1/3 cup at the most.

Add the two cups of crushed ice last. As a reference, the cup pictured above is large enough to hold a full can of pop. Pulse until smooth. If the ice pieces are really big, sometimes an air bubble will form in the middle. Unplug the blender, pop the air bubble with a spoon. Re-plug in and pulse.

Pour into two glasses and drink with a straw so that the smoothie doesn't go glopping out all at once. Makes two servings.

Happy Combos (All include one banana)
1) +raspberries, vanilla yogurt, pineapple juice, coconut water (a little on the tangy side)
2) +strawberries, coconut yogurt, pineapple juice, and coconut water
3) +raspberries, raspberry yogurt, coconut water and honey (yuzu honey if you have it)
4) +blueberries, raspberries, mixed berry yogurt, Naked juice, and honey
