smoked sausage and lentil soup

This is descended from a long-lost Good Housekeeping recipe. The bonus on this soup is that it's fast but still tastes like it took a long time.

1 smoked sausage (not Portuguese sausage)--kielbasa type, thinly sliced
1 onion, chopped
3-4 carrots, chopped
2-3 stalks of celery, chopped
4-5 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
6 cups of water
1 box of chicken stock
2 cans of diced tomatoes

1/2 a bag of dry lentils (about a cup)
Hawaiian salt and black epper, to taste

In a dutch oven, cook onions and kielbasa. Use the drippings from the kielbasa to cook the onions. Add carrots and celery and cook until the vegetables are starting to brown. Add water, chicken broth, tomatoes and lentils. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat, and simmer for about 45 minutes, so the lentils can get soft.

Good with a crusty bread, or the trusty Hawaii standby--soup and rice!
