shoyu hotdogs |

What could be more American than baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet? So says the old advertising jingle.
But shoyu hotdogs?! Even better, a shoyu hotdog octopus? This is pure small-kid time comfort food. My mom was partial to Oscar Meyer, Ball Park, Armour or whatever was on sale. Back in the day, we didn't really wonder what part of what animal was responsible for a hot dog. It was just enough that we knew it wasn't an actual dog. So give in and buy hotdogs. Beef hotdogs. If you really want to feel better about it, buy grass-fed Angus organic beef hotdogs. But I don't think it really matters for this one.

Slice hotdogs on the diagonal, as noted above.
If you want to make the octopus, cut the hotdog in half, the carefully split in in half, leaving about 1/2". Split each half in half to make 4 tentacles. Then split those in half to make 8. Be prepared to have at least one partially amputated octopus.
Heat shoyu and sugar in a small saute pan. Toss the hotdogs in and saute just enough for the shoyu/sugar sauce to stick to the hotdogs and get shiny.
If you are making hotdog octopi, place them so that their tentacles are fanned out, and they will curl as the hotdogs heat.
Best with musubi, rice and baby carrot sticks.
