We have big and sometimes even louder discussions about not-so-serious stuff-- whether the bad guys in X-Men should have attacked Wolverine instead Mystique, if even-numbered Harry Potter books were really necessary, and our latest--what are the foods that we LOVE or Simply Cannot Stand At All?
Tons of love it/hate it food lists are strewn across the Internet, but most include some pretty mundane things--cilantro, eggplant, mushrooms, bleu cheese. We went way, way beyond that.
Here are our first five.
Poi. Split Verdict.
The parents and family who were raised on it appreciate the slightly sweet smoothness of fresh poi. ONO.
The Teenagers and assorted friends believe it to be a tasteless, pasty pseudo-liquid that is reminiscent of wallpaper paste (heresy!). EW.
Black Licorice. Complete Fragmentation.
Teenager in favor's argument--The babysitter loves it, Antti Niemi loves it, my friend (editor's note: a singular friend of many) loves it. ONO.
Teenager Unopposed--Would eat it if it were there. Also note that this particular teenager eats a lot of things because they are there. Neither Ono nor Ew.
Parents and parents' many opinionated friends. It's not chocolate, vanilla or any flavor except dirt. And why would you eat something that looks like coal? EW.
Natto. Unanimous EW.
One should not eat food that looks, tastes and smells like a head cold. One or perhaps even two of three might be OK, but all three yield a categorical EW.
In natto's defense, we do have quite a few friends and relatives that we really like who say ONO, especially with fresh mochi, shoyu and grated daikon.
Squid Luau. Unanimous EW.
Looks, tastes and smells like a stagnant swamp. That is full of very unclean alligators. The ingredients are all good (squid, luau leaves or spinach and coconut milk), and I really want to like this but my eyes and nose won't let me. I couldn't even google a palatable photo. EW.
I'm pretty sure my dad and relatives would say ONO, but those are the same relatives who like natto.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Laulau, which is making the round on a FB video, is definitely ONO.
Celery. Trending EW.
3/4 in the household say calorie-negative is not enough to make us want to eat it. EW.
Sole dissenter plus the dog say a convenient edible holder for peanut butter, tuna fish or any number of spreadable materials, and also a good crunchy into all manner of salads. ONO.
Ono or Ew--what say you Ohana?
