sanny's hamburgers and gravy

Picture
I absolutely adore my sister Sandy’s cooking and she measures even less than I do. These burgers are really flavorful and can be eaten by themselves or with a bun and trimmings. Sandy says the mayonnaise holds everything together and keeps the burgers moist.

Sanny’s hamburgers are heavenly eaten loco-moco-style with rice, an easy-over egg and gravy. Myy katonk kids (and cardiologist) prefer mashed potatoes.

1 package of hamburger, in this rare case, no substitutes
1 onion, finely chopped
A few good shakes of Worcestershire sauce
Finely chopped mushrooms (optional)
2-3 pieces of bread, toasted and crumbled
1 spoonful or so of mayonnaise
1 little bit of sesame oil
Hawaiian salt (the red kind) and black pepper
Garlic, finely chopped (optional)
1 onion, thinly sliced into rings
1 tub of mushrooms, sliced
Pan drippings from the hamburgers
A little bit of hamburger
Beef broth
Flour to thicken
Milk (optional)

Mix everything together and form patties. Set aside a bit of hamburger for gravy. Fry or grill patties

Cook the extra hamburger and onion in the pan drippings until the onions carmelize. Add mushrooms and cook until they release their juices. Add beef broth to make as much or as little gravy as you like. Sift in flour slowly to thicken. Add milk to taste
